Opportunities for Early Access: "Nightwatch" Coming Together

Thank you to all our grim gothic loving supporters.
The team have been hard at work on (amongst several things, like the new Ion Heart Pins) the Grim Gazette games. So much so, in fact, that Nightwatch has gone through at least 6 more variations on its original draft!
We've been revising the balancing of the Watch, as well as adding more world-building lore to the Rogue's Gallery of crooks and killers, and the strange Beats of the Old Smoke that you'll be unlucky enough to visit. We've also thrown in a few "friends" to spice up your career:
But with everything we add, we find its even more important to refine and leave spaces for what the player gets to bring to the table.
"The most important thing we're working on is making the world feel real, and established, but then letting the player be the one who breathes life into it. It's a solo game, so we really want you to have that ownership of your experience with it." Adam Holloway, lead writer of Nightwatch
If you want to see more of Nightwatch and spend some time in its dark and deadly world, then you're in luck. We're hoping to organise some closed and exclusive playtests of this game very soon.

A Chat With Charlie
We thought we'd sit down with Charlie and give him a chance to answer some questions about the Grim Gazette and where it came from, here's what we found it!
What inspired the idea Grim Gazette?
Charlie:It was the combination of having a bunch of games and systems we had been working on and developing and trying to find a home for them all, and a discussion about old-school newspaper serials. We'd been wondering how to tell longer, grander stories in more bitesize chunks, and the newspaper serials - Charles Dickens published numerous books this way, Stephen King utilised it for the Green Mile, but we wondered if you could apply it to roleplaying games. That evolved as an idea into each 'serial' being its own specific game, but a chapter in a larger story.
Why Victorian Horror?
Charlie:I've always had a thing for Gothic fiction, especially the Victorian era, there's just something about it that pulls me in. There's an ornate grubbiness to it all, a beauty covered in soot and grime where an interest in the dark and macabre things in the world was considered normal. The Victorians were obsessed with folklore, the paranormal, the chance that there could be something strange out there beyond their ken. In that way, I feel a certain draw to the time period, as their curiosity for the strange and unusual lines up very much with my own. That and my penchant for run-on sentences...
Where did the idea of the Campaign Guide come from?
Charlie:The newspaper serials were definitely a key inspiration, but also sweeping, insane stories like The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, or characters like Alan Quartermaine, tall tales of characters who led rich and varied lives.
It was also a thought that many of the adventurers we play as rarely get a chance to grow old, have regrets, and have their pasts catch up with them in interesting ways. The games, connected by the Campaign Guide, allowed us to see where these characters' lives could lead and provide snapshots of the different chapters they could experience.
Are there some key inspirations for the visual style of the books?
Charlie:The etchings found in newspapers and older Victorian periodicals have always fascinated me and were a starting point, especially in the Penny Dreadfuls. When I sat down with Ben and Mizer to iron out the visual style further, we found ourselves drifiting towards our love of graphic novels once again. In particular, the work of Bernie Wrightson, his Frankenstein illustrations in particular, as well as Kevin O'Neill work on the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (a story inspiration for us also).
What are you most excited to see players do with the Grim Gazette?
Charlie:I always love hearing table stories from our games being player, but for the Grim Gazette, I'm fascinated to see what characters it creates!
We hope that's shed some further light on the Grim Gazette! If you have any more questions for Charlie, let us know. But we have one for you: who is your first character going to be? Tell us in the comments below!
